CNRT nominates its esteemed Secretary General, Dionisio Babo Soares, as official spokesman – A Man Who is Not Afraid to Speak the Truth

Dili – 6th June 2007

Xanana Gusmao and the newly formed CNRT party nominates the well regarded and highly respected Dionisio Babo Soares, Secretary General of the party, as its official spokesman. His dedication to the country and professional reputation as a humanitarian and political activist is well documented, with exemplary long service to Presidents of East Timor, His Excellency Jose Ramos-Horta and His Excellency Xanana Gusmao.

Soares is well suited to represent a party whose policies and mandates represent modern democratic principles, a party predicted by pollsters to be likely to lead the country to a new era of transparency, accountability and prosperity after the legislative election in June. Soares’ opposition counterpart is Mari Alkatiri of Fretilin.

Mari Alkatiri is the disgraced former Prime Minister, forced to resign from parliament in 2006 when widespread violence broke out due to inept leadership. This was followed by the report by the United Nations supported Independent Special Inquiry, that detailed his role in the arming of a civil militia. Alkatiri continues, despite widespread criticisim - including from within his own party and its factions - continues as Secretary General of Fretilin. He continues to confuse this role with that of the Prime Minister, as he attempts to drive the Prime Minister from the back seat, often addressing the President directly through the media without following protocol.

Soares stated today, “The Presidents of our great nation have no compulsion to answer to the likes of Mari Alkatiri. He forfeited his role of executive leadership last year, and his campaign tactics and leadership qualities are not a positive reflection of any modern day political party. He has become irrelevant in our pursuit of re-establishing a true and transparent democracy in East Timor.

“My job in this campaign is monumental, because more important than my title as Secretary General and official spokesman, is my obligation to listen to our electorate - the citizens of East Timor. They will rely on my service to the party to connect their views and visions with the executive leadership and Heads of State.

“The problem with my counterpart is he does not listen. So at every instance, I will take the time to listen to a citizen before I expend energies in addressing the propaganda, mistruths and allegations from Fretilin. This is true now, throughout the campaign and well into the future when the CNRT establishes an innovative and progressive mulit-partisan government, one of national unity that our people have been seeking since 1999. Our members’ record for honesty, dignity and exemplary moral compass stands alone and will measure up before God and the good people of our nation.”

“I am steadfast in my view as spokesman that Fretilin will be held accountable for every alleged breach of code of conduct, for every instance of violence enacted by their followers, and for every attempt to use parliamentary position to curb the consititutional rights of the people."

Soares is committed to his role of ensuring the CNRT, as a party, represents the values, morals and codes of ethic expected by a modern day democratic nation and its leaders.

“I represent the party proudly, with full transparency and a clean and clear record. It is my honour to serve my people, my country and ultimately to serve God within our blessed nation.”
